Layar
Layar is the world’s largest mobile augmented reality platform with more than 1M active users, thousands of developers and over 1,500 layers. Layar brings impactful augmented reality experiences into people’s everyday lives. The Layar platform is available on Android, iPhone and Bada devices, comes globally pre-installed on millions of phones and is promoted by leading handset manufacturers and carriers like Samsung, Verizon and Sprint.
Layar has been named as a 2011 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and TIME magazine, as a Disruptive Innovator at the 2010 Deloitte Fast 50 awards, and won the Grand Prix 2010 at Netexplorateur.
Layar has been and still is a very fast paced and growing company. The technology of Layar is evolving quickly and adopted by an increasing number of mobile users on various platforms. Therefore the ability to develop for new platforms and grow the team is of the utmost importance. Layar realized that this would be a difficult task to achieve when solely focusing on The Netherlands as a source for highly skilled mobile software engineers.

Therefore, in the beginning of 2010 Ciklum was selected to form a team of 5 software engineers in Ukraine. Timing was very strict, but nevertheless the aforementioned team started within the set timeframe of 5 weeks. Currently, there are two teams, one in Kyiv and one in Donetsk. With help from Ciklum Services and Consulting (CSC) department, processes were implemented; and today the vast majority of the development of the Layar mobile clients and of quality assurance is done in Ukraine with 18 software engineers. The plan for 2011 is to grow the teams in Ukraine rapidly to be able to keep up with the demand of the market.
Besides the apparent cost savings, flexibility has been an important asset to Layar when establishing our teams in Ukraine. Our engineers at Ciklum are very much an integral part of the Layar family and contribute at the very core of the company, which is pretty cool...!
